Dream is the thirteenth story in the anthology manga .'Neo Devilman'. The art and story was done by Miki Tori.

Synopsis[]

The story begins with a young boy, Mochizuki Tadashi, travelling through the school ground. He eventually walks towards a bantam coop and, after noticing the door opened and bloody feathers on the ground, he investigate, only to find the decapitated head of the bantam.

The scene switches to the teacher's lounge, as the principal comments on rumors of strange diseases worrying the kids. One of them asks if they should contact the police, to which he responds no, saying it would be bad if the situation gained public knowledge. One teacher, Ijima, with female teacher, Shindo by his side, argues it will spread from the children to the parents anyways. The vice principal and principal are quiet, before concluding on distributing handouts.

After that, the scene turns to a giant, black figure ominously looming over the school. Mochizuki sees this and starts to run away as the figure's clawed hand reaches for him. He tries to outrun it and from the school building all the teachers are watching him in amusement, including Ijima and Shindo. MochizukI continues to run until he steps on a sticky substance, slowing him down and causing the claw to decapitate him.

Mochizuki wakes up in the infirmary as Shindo calls his name and asks if he was awake. The nurse mentions that the strange occurences are because of the vice-principal's announcement of an early retirement that year, before she too notices Mochizuki is awake. As Shindo and Mochizuki walk to his class, Shindo mentions she called his mother, but apparently she couldn't come from home to the school. She suspects it's because of the heat, but notes that his mother, too, could be affected by a bad mood, like many others. Mochizuki is seen focusing on Shindo's upper legs.

The aforementioned "bad mood" is demonstrated as Shindo is seen stressing over her chaotic students. She repeatedly tells them to be quiet, but they continue to run rampant. during this, a fellow classmate of Mochizuki, Mimura, teases him, saying him passing out was actually an excuse to skip gym class. Another classmate, Kazumi, tells Mimura to stop, but he continues, saying Mochizuki is strange and that he comes twenty minutes early to school due to the bantam. Shindo yells for them to be quiet, only to be ignored. She notes that this is strange behavior for them, thinking it wasn't like this a little while ago.

Mimura is revealed to have taken a personal book of Mochizuki contains diary entries of him noticing the consistent strange dreams he's been having. Mimura reads it aloud as Mochizuki tries to get it back. Suddenly, Ijima bursts into the room telling them to shut up, much to Shindo's surprise. He then smacks Mochizuki.

At the end of the school day, three children discuss a rumor about the vice principal having been responsible for killing the bantam, following it with a further rumor saying he had been seen swallowing a whole frog. They are scared away by the sudden arrival of the vice principal, who is approached by Miss. Shindo shortly after. Shindo apologizes on behalf of the children for their tales but the vice principal laughs it away, saying that whilst still adorable, he doesn't really understand the children of today, and mentions how he had shared the same dream Tadashi had, about the great grim figure in the sky. Meanwhile Tadashi walk's home with Kazumi, with Kazumi doing all the talking. When he reaches his home, the building is strangely empty as he approaches the balcony and looks outward.

Wlaking through the city later that night, Shindo wonders if the vice principal was responsible for killing the bantam, but quickly discards the thought. She finds herself in a alleyway alongside a man as they spot a group of thugs kicking a homeless man. The thugs turn towards the duo and one of them pulls a knife on Shindo, just before his head explodes into a mass of tentacles. The remaining thugs flee in fear, screaming about 'Monster Death Disease', and leaves Shindo at the feet of the man, suddenly lost in insatiable heat. They go back to a hotel and the man comments that while having sex, the woman held an expression like a demon. Shindo falls asleep, and dreams of herself looking up at the giant in the sky.

The next day, the head of the schools rabbit is found on the grounds. Both the police and parents emergency association are called and a number of news crews assemble outside the front gates. Mr. Ijima is shaken when he see's a policeman with a total disregard for securing his pistol. As parents tear into the teaching staff and cry out for the principal's firing, Ijima watches as Shindo leaves to the school's rooftop. Inside the classroom, Tadashi notices Kazumi's absence, as rumors of 'Monster Death Disease' occurring at her home begin to pass around. Suddenly he stands up and approaches the window, starring straight ahead.

On the rooftop, Shindo smokes a cigarette as she is approached by Ijima. She begins to admonish him for his abuse of Tadashi, before Ijima stops him in his track, admitting that he had seen her take students to the school's rooftop and molest them, among them being Tadashi whom she had forced to pleasure her. Ijima goes on to admit his own deviant tendencies, desires to pop the children's heads like ants, and also that he had been having the dreams of the giant in the sky as he pins Shindo to the same wall she molested her students. He shares similar ideas to Shindo's about a growing restlessness in the people, but instead of fearing it he seems to be excited for it. As he begins to squeeze Shindo's breast, his head is suddenly blown to pieces, releasing a geyser of blood.

Falling to her knees, Shindo is shocked to see Tadashi standing before her, and finally he speaks, confessing how strange he found humanity. As he talks it becomes clear that 'Tadashi' was now just a shell being used by a demon. It goes on to say how he and his kind had been integrating themselves into human society for several weeks, and that while attempting to fuse with an adult would more often then not cause either a Devilman or 'Monster Death Disease', but children, free of adult guilt's or emotions, were perfect vessels for the demons. Below, the school children silently begin to walk into the school courtyard and stare upwards towards the sky. Shindo stares upwards, as does the schools faculty and the news crew with their cameras, as the colossal figure of Zennon begins to form in the center of the city. Still confused, Shindo asks the demon why it saved her, the creature responds with a smug smile as the demons phallic head extends from Tadashi's body and leers over her, and it admits that just as it took control of Tadashi's form, the child begged the demon to enact revenge upon her, something it was happy to do. As the demon begins to burrow into her body through her legs, Shindo stares up as Zennon looks down upon her, and she wonders what killed the animals at the school.
