
True Devilman (真・デビルマン, Shin Devilman) is a series of novels by Yasutaka Nagai, based on his brother Go Nagai's manga Devilman, with illustrations by the latter. It was published by Asahi Sonorama in four volumes in 1981. Revised editions were published in 1999 as Devilman: The Novel (デビルマン The Novel) by Dengeki, an imprint of MediaWorks.
The series served as the basis for the Devilman: The Birth and Devilman: The Demon Bird OVAs. A novelization of the first film, also written by Yasutaka, titled Shin Video Shosetsu – Devilman: Tanjo Hen (新ビデオ小説 デビルマン 誕生編), was published in 1987 with illustrations by Kazuo Komatsubara.
Differences from the manga[]
- Akira Fudo's parents were studying demons with Ryo Asuka's father and got attacked by them while examining the Himalayas. Akira's father Reijiro was merged with a demon, while his mother was killed by Jinmen. Their assistant Yamanobe became a devilman and ultimately died trying to protect the Makimura family from the mob that eventually killed them.
- Several characters who went unnamed during the original manga are named includeing Kozo and Akiko Makimura the parents of Miki and Tare and Massami Izumi aka Devilman Puffurle, it also said that before her transformation Massami was a school teacher.
